Day Forty-Three Through Day Fifty-Three

Might and Magic

“It’s officially August twenty-seventh, and three hundred thirty-four years have passed. You can thank a couple of stargazers, math, and some weird-looking timepieces for it getting figured out. It’s all above my head, and I ain’t about to try and explain it. By the way, word has already gotten out, and some of the teens now claim they should get to drink alcohol since they are now in their hundreds.” Mrs. Sarah finished with a laugh.

“Three hundred and forty years. That makes me nearly four hundred years old. I look pretty good for a quadringentīgenarian, don’t I?” I replied, grinning.

“What the hell is a quad, whatever the heck you just said?” Mrs. Sarah asked.

“Quadringentī is Greek for four hundred and genarian is…” I got cut off before I could finish.

“Yeah, yeah, I get it, like octogenarian. You’re just trying to show off your big brain. Something you could do by helping with a couple of things like laws, or at least rules, around here. And making some kind of police force.” Mrs. Sarah replied.

The council meeting was moving right along with few road bumps until now. Looking at Ben, I replied, “Do we really need a police force? Isn’t the oath keeping everyone well-behaved?” Everyone looked at each other and then slowly back at me. Surprisingly it was Cole that answered. I figured since Ben handled security, it would have been him.

“Yes, mostly. But the oath isn’t a catchall for everything.” Cole continued, “Kids are still kids, teens are still teens, and some folks believe what they want to contribute deserves more attention and reward than others. There are areas where if someone feels they are truly in the right, the oath doesn’t seem to correct them. Thus we need some fair and clear laws, but maybe not as extreme as we had before.”

“And we need the police to enforce what the oath doesn’t cover,” I offered.

“Not exactly, but also yes. The oath will cover whatever laws you command since the oath requires fealty. But with police making rounds, people can bring their issues more easily to them, which will help cause fewer issues. Mostly people have worked things out themselves, but we are hitting enough numbers now we need some kind of official police and, honestly, a judge, which right now is you. At least it’s you until you appoint knights or a lord that can act as a judge,” Cole finished with a pointed look.

“And do you think you would be a good knight or lord, Cole?” I asked with my own pointed look. Cole and I have had our run-ins, but nothing that we didn’t clear up. He always struck me as a very compassionate and affable man, if a bit too unrealistic about the world we now live in. He answered rather quickly.

“If you decided to put me in one of those positions, I would take it and work hard to fill the job. But I wouldn’t want either of them.
